Tragedy struck early Sunday morning in Quezon province as five members of a family — including two young children — were killed when a giant buli tree toppled onto their home amid the heavy rains and winds brought by Tropical Storm Ramil.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. in Barangay Saguinsinan, Pitogo, Quezon.

The victims included a 66-year-old grandfather, a couple in their mid-30s, their 11-year-old child, and a five-month-old baby.

Only the eldest son managed to survive, as he was near the door when the massive tree crashed through their home.

The young survivor recounted the horrifying moment, saying, “Pinilit ko silang hilahin pero hindi ko kinaya sa laki ng puno,” which translates to, “I tried to pull them out but couldn’t because of the size of the tree.” Despite his efforts and calling for help, rescuers arrived too late to save his family.

All victims sustained fatal head and body injuries.

Residents told authorities that the tree had long been considered dangerous.

The survivor shared that both his grandfather and a previous homeowner had attempted to burn the tree’s base to prevent such accidents, but it remained standing until it finally collapsed during the storm.

Local police confirmed that strong winds from Tropical Storm Ramil caused the weakened tree to snap, likely worsened by previous burning attempts that compromised its stability.

As of now, the remains of the victims have been brought to a local funeral home. Congressman Reynan Arrogancia’s office has pledged to cover burial expenses and provide assistance to the lone surviving child.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the importance of assessing old or weakened trees, especially in areas frequently hit by storms, to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
