The new track follows the release of Gomez’s collaborative album I Said I Loved You First with now-husband Benny Blanco. According to a press release ahead of the album’s drop in March, it promised to give fans “a unique window into their relationship.”
“This album came together organically as a direct result of the comfort that they both felt when working together creatively, allowing them to produce art that authentically reflects their experiences,” said the press release.
It added: “It chronicles their entire story—before they met, falling in love and looking to what the future holds.”
In the music video, directed by Luke Orlando, Gomez, 33, appears in various open spaces wearing an all-black ensembles as she sings about unconditional love.
“And I’ll be there when you lose yourself / To remind you of who you are / And I’ll be there like nobody else / You’re still beautiful in the dark,” she sings.

Just weeks after marrying Benny Blanco, Selena Gomez is singing about supporting her partner in sickness and in health for Nobody Wants This season 2. The star released her new single “In the Dark” as the show’s latest installment premiered, along with a sultry music video.
“In the Dark” wasn’t written for the Netflix show, though; fans theorized it was actually for a scrapped 2010s album they nicknamed Seven Heavens. The project ultimately became 2020’s Rare. Gomez nodded to this in her caption introducing the song, writing, “‘In The Dark’ is out now. This is just a little nostalgia droplet and I hope you love it. 🖤”
Lyrically, “In the Dark” beautifully captures what it is like to support a partner through hardship. In the pre-chorus, Gomez conveys her dedication to standing by them, singing, “And I’ll be there when you lose yourself / To remind you of who you are / And I’ll be there like nobody else / You’re so beautiful in the dark.”
In the bridge, she implores her partner to confide in her, singing, “Show me the way that your heart breaks / Show me the side that you’re hiding from / Let me inside, baby, I won’t run.”
It’s unclear who this track was inspired by, but it could easily be Gomez herself singing about the support that helped her through her own mental health journey.
In 2020, she revealed she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder; in a 2022 Rolling Stone interview, she spoke about privately experiencing an episode of psychosis in 2018.
“I’m going to be very open with everybody about this: I’ve been to four treatment centers,” Gomez said. “I think when I started hitting my early twenties is when it started to get really dark, when I started to feel like I was not in control of what I was feeling, whether that was really great or really bad.”
