A devastating tragedy has struck Senegalese football following the death of 18-year-old goalkeeper Cheikh Touré in Ghana. Authorities say the young athlete was deceived by fake football scouts who lured him with false promises of a professional trial abroad, only to kidnap him upon his arrival.
According to the Senegalese Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Touré was contacted by individuals posing as football agents who offered him a trial with a professional club. Upon reaching Ghana, he was kidnapped, and the perpetrators demanded a ransom from his family.
When the family was unable to meet the ransom demands, the kidnappers took his life, the ministry confirmed.
Authorities in Ghana and Senegal are working closely to investigate the case and bring the culprits to justice.
The Senegalese Embassy in Ghana stated that Touré’s body is currently being kept at a mortuary in the Ashanti Region, with repatriation arrangements underway.
The Senegalese government expressed condolences to the family and vowed to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.
“We pledge to cooperate with Ghanaian authorities to identify and severely punish the perpetrators,” the Ministry said.
Touré, a promising goalkeeper who trained at the Espri Foot Mbul Academy in Senegal, had believed he was heading to Ghana for a legitimate opportunity.
Reports from Ghana SoccerNet and GhanaWeb indicate that he was kidnapped in Kumasi, where fraudsters demanded ransom payments. When his family could not pay, Touré was found dead the following day, on October 17.
The tragic incident has reignited discussions around football trafficking and fraudulent recruitment schemes targeting young African talents.
Authorities have urged parents, clubs, and academies to verify all offers of international trials or transfers through official football associations and trusted agents.
“This heartbreaking case is a reminder of the growing menace of fake scouts exploiting the dreams of young players,” said the ministry.
